Since we moved to a new house over two years ago, the City of Houston sends us a ~$30 bill every month, which is basically a maintenance fee. Despite numerous phone calls, the city has yet to send us a bill for water usage. Based on my neighborhood’s group text, our neighbors are getting monthly water bills anywhere from $200-$2000 (I’m guessing the high end has pools or something).
My last call had the water department employee reviewing our call history, repeated ignored work orders, then ignored work orders labeled “high priority” due to our calls, and there is basically no reason why we are not getting water bills except laziness or incompetence, or most likely, a combo. When I expressed my concern that we would be unable to pay the amount if the city ever got around to billing us, the employee said we could do a payment plan.
On the conservative side, we probably owe $5K. If we’re somewhere in the middle, we could owe $20K. My questions are: should we be putting money aside every month for this bill that might never come, and if so, what amount? Should we keep paying the maintenance fees or hope that maybe going into arrears would force them to give us an accurate bill? Short of calling the news or making a stink on social media, is there any way to get a water bill that I am missing?
