The only source of credit I have on my record is a $4000 student loan, which I paid off last year in full. Currently working at a temp job for a credit dept of a company making $1300 a month. Living with parents rent-free and own my own car as I purchased the car from my parents. Only bills I pay are my auto insurance and water bill. I have never owned a credit card in my entire life.

Is it normal to be in my late 20s and never own a credit card?

Back in my high school days, I had classmates as young as 16 years old showing off their credit cards and buying lots of fast food. We lived in a nice suburban neighborhood that was middle class but in the normal area (as in not in a rich neighborhood). As a kid, I felt out of place for not having a credit card.

Over the past year, I have been getting lots of credit card offers in the mail from my local credit union, the same credit union I have been using since getting out of the military. My main reason for not applying for a credit card is because of the fear of overspending it on useless crap and getting into debt, especially since it is so easy to get into debt. Since I have paid off all the debt I owe, which is only the $4000 student loan, would now be a good time to open a credit card? Main goal of mine is to build up my credit score enough to the point where I can buy a new car in the next couple years and own my own home. My score isn't terrible, just decent enough. But I would like to bump it up by a couple points.
