Was helping my mom open a credit card and found out she had massive debt from other credit cards she didn’t paid. She told me she has never opened a credit card before and shouldn’t own anyone anything. Did some deeper digging and found out that my aunt has been secretly using a credit card under my mom’s name that she opened pretending to be my mom without my mom knowing.
I confronted my aunt about this and she admitted that it was her debt and begged me to not tell my mom about any of this. I went to Credit Karma and saw that most of it has been closed but there is still debt that is owned and a lot of it has been put into collections with everything adding up to over $5k worth of debt. Most of the accounts were created in 2018 so my aunt has been pretending to my mom and using credit cards under my mom’s name without her knowing for 5 years now which has led to my mom having really bad credit and having multiple debt collector after her without her knowing. I feel so shocked and betrayed because I never thought would ever do something like this.
I have no idea what I should do next in this situation and need advice. Help would be appreciated, thank you.
