In November 2022, I had an emergency surgery at my local hospital for an appendectomy. I was hospitalized for approximately 6 hours and did not stay overnight. Much of that time consisted of me waiting for the surgeon to be available. I had no medical insurance at the time because I had planned on having it through my employer, and when I began my employment it was ultimately not a provided benefit (state job), but I digress. I was left with a $70k bill which was discounted down to a $25k bill, which makes me think it’s not an accurate bill. I’ve asked for itemized bills twice and it is not detailed. Regardless, I cannot afford this amount either. The hospital presented only two payment plan options for monthly payments, neither of which I could sustainably afford. The lowest monthly plan was more than what I pay in rent. On the payment website they did allow for “custom payments.” So I proceeded to make monthly payments of $50. I’m showing that I’m attempting to pay the debt by providing consistent monthly payments. I have started to receive mail and calls from a debt agency stating that they will start trying to collect. I have applied for financial assistance with the appropriate documents, but I’m skeptical that I will receive help.
So…what are my options? I’m considering seeking legal assistance.
