A year ago, I rented a minivan for a week while on vacation. On the last day, I discovered that the van had been hit by another car. It didn’t happen while I was driving, so it must have happened while we were at dinner the night before. The damage was not extensive, but it was noticeable and needed to be fixed. I notified the car rental company and reported the accident to state highway patrol. (It was in an unincorporated area.)
When I rented the van, I had declined insurance coverage with the rental company, because I have insurance on my car that covers rentals as well.
A few weeks later, the car rental company contacted me about the cost of the repairs – a few thousand dollars – and I put them in contact with my insurance company. Long story short, my insurance company has not paid. They have been dragging their feet for so long that the case has been sent to collections. So now I have a collection agency calling me on the regular and dinging my otherwise excellent credit rating.
The collection agency says I could just pay it myself and make this whole thing go away, but I don’t want to because that’s why I have insurance – to pay for things like this.
Is there a way forward here? Can I make my insurance company pay? They don’t doubt that they should pay. They just keep asking for more information to prolong this thing indefinitely.
I’m so fed up with them that I want to switch insurers, but will switching make them less likely to pay?
Any help you can offer would be appreciated.
