My parents (55M & 54F) are getting divorced after 32 years of marriage. My mom is finally leaving after 20+ years of his repeated infidelity with sex workers. He makes a good salary (I’d estimate ~$275k total comp annually) and she was a teacher for the majority of their marriage (retired early but eligible for PERA at 65). Now she teaches private lessons and is a musician. I’d estimate she makes around $1500/month from her various ventures. Their house is paid off and she will continue to live in it after the divorce. Her car is also paid off.
She is very frugal and is confident she can live off that, but I’m concerned about her healthcare coverage, home utilities, etc. I am also concerned that my dad might impulsively buy a car or property before they start the proceedings, though he’s been strongly advised against it.
Does anyone have any experience with a similar situation? What is the typical outcome? Trying to get an idea of if/how much I’ll need to support my mom when all is said and done. We are in Colorado. Thanks in advance!
