I'm relatively new to managing my own portfolio. Almost all the guides, tools, calculators seem to only incorporate:

  • Large-cap stocks
  • (sometimes Mid-cap stocks)
  • Small-cap stocks
  • International securities
  • (rarely Emerging markets)
  • Fixed-Income securities (Bonds)
  • Money Market (Treasuries)
  • Cash

I haven't found one yet that includes REITs. Some explain what REITs are, but then the actual suggestions never include them. Mainly I'm curious why that is, but I'm also personally not sure if I should incorporate them into my portfolio. I've got a long time horizon, but it's unclear if there's any compelling reason to choose these over diversified equities.
