This might be an incredibly stupid question but I don't understand.

I'm in the US and pay for healthcare.

Last year, was in a car accident, lady hit me. Cat totalled, broken leg, etc. Got a lawyer which was a fantastic suggestion. She took care of things and I just did what she said. Anyway, my car insurance paid for so much, and then it hit my health insurance. Easily maxed out deductible and out of pocket maximum. (Of course kept paying monthly premiums.) Then basically didn't see another bill other than copays.

And yet I still see all these people with hospital bills that have insurance. Like...once you're maxed out, you shouldn't owe anything. Or did I just lucky somehow?
