Last Friday, the VIX traded at 18.5 to finish up the week, it’s lowest reading in more than a year. Heavily below it’s average of 26 since stocks began their lurch lower at the start of 2022.

Each of the four instances last year that the VIX traded below 20 indicated near term peaks in the S&P. They reversed lower in January, April, August, and early December after the volatility gauge dipped into the teens.
