Last May I went to the doctor and gave them my health insurance info. My claim was processed incorrectly (my insurance eventually acknowledged this) and denied. They helpfully let me know I owed $1600 and provided a way to pay through their portal. (In other words, doctor never actually sent me a bill.) Because I'm responsible I paid that via a CC.
Eventually, after some back and forth on the phone I was able to get my claim re-processed a few weeks later and they paid out. My patient responsibility was only supposed to be $50. But their payout was significantly less than what my initial "responsibility" was. (Like, it was under a grand.)
I contacted my doctor, asked for a refund, they said sure no problem. This was over the phone.
Fast forward 6 months, I've been calling the doctor every month to check up on my refund status that they kept saying would take longer and longer for various reasons. Eventually, I find out from my insurance company that they never cashed the insurance company's check. The doctor continues to give me the run-around about yah yah it's on someone else's desk now for approval and such.
I tried disputing the charge with my credit card and lost. I tried filing a complaint with my insurance company and ... they re-issued the check but otherwise did nothing.
So I've done a bit of googling I've come up with several options and I'm really confused:
- File a complaint with Arizona DIFI? https://difi.az.gov/file-complaint-against-insurance-entity The site says "grievances with healthcare providers" but their quick tool seems to make it clear they only deal with insurance providers. I'm not sure if they have jurisdiction here? Their phone line seems to be defunct.
- File a complaint with the Arizona attorney general? https://www.azag.gov/complaints/consumer Resolution takes 8-9 months?
- Is there something else I can do?
- Am I out the money???
