Tacked a few days in Amsterdam to a trip I was already taking to London this week. When I booked the trip, we were running tight on our travel budget so I booked a less expensive hotel near the airport vs one right in the city center. I had researched travel options to make sure public transport was available and many sites said Ubers were inexpensive and plentiful. Normally.
We aligned our trip to celebrate NYE in Amsterdam and had no idea that the trains halted service early in the evening, driving Ubers to over $100 one way to get to the party we had tickets for.
Trains for the rest of the time were active 24 hours so we both paid for 48 hour unlimited passes but in Amsterdam, they have several different lines that all require a different pass.
Finally, the hotel we stayed at had a shuttle that took you to the train hub which was extremely convenient, however their new policy charged us for each use after 01/02. Had we stayed any longer, it would have been an extra $10 every time we took the shuttle.
All in all, a reminder to cough up the cash for convenience and location for hotels! It can make or break a vacation you’re already spending a lot of money for.
