I just wanted to note in case some people are not familiar with lentils that red lentils or other kinds are great source of protein. They will not match all the amino acids available in say eggs or meat. However lentils are cheap and can be added as a staple item in pantry to reduce overall cost. Another upside is cooking lentil soup is really easy. Just boil veggies and lentils with some canola oil, spices and you are done! Example recipe:
