I recently lost my job to a mass layoff situation 6 weeks ago and I’ve been in the job market since. After 450 job applications for professional work in my field, I received a call from the recruiter of the most recent company I interviewed with telling me that I’m about to receive an offer on Monday from the hiring manager and he estimated it would be around $100k. That’s nothing to snub my nose to as that’s slightly more than I’ve made in the past. $100k is a lot of money but it seems low for this role. This is a senior level position of a huge global company. After interviewing for the role, I found it has a much more tremendous amount of scope and responsibility than I initially thought. It honestly scares me and I’m surprised they chose me but that’s a different topic. After looking up senior positions with this title on Glassdoor for my area, it’s confidently saying this position should be $163.5k. This is also what my previous company and another competitor in the area would have paid as well.

Glassdoor has the low level version of this position at $100 but even says the senior version (this job) is $144k at this company. That is a significant difference from $100k and is not competitive. I am absolutely willing to come down from $163, especially for concessions like more PTO or bigger bonus payout, but I can’t justify taking this role at $100k. Not with this level of responsibility. On the flip side, I also don’t have a job. So it almost feels like a slap in the face to my family to turn down a six figure job.

I’m not a confrontational person and feel uncomfortable in these situations with people in authority. I tend to freeze up but this is really important to me and I have to grow a pair. I’ve thought about things to say and explaining how it’s not a fair market price but I’m looking for any additional advice, skills, or talking points you guys can offer. I feel like the people on this sub are always right on the money with employment advice.
