Sometimes the least sexy strategies are the most successful strategies. I can’t tell you the countless hours I’ve spent watching charts and researching stocks all to be trumped by the glorious S&P 500. Very few professional investors can beat the averages of the S&P over an extended period of time. With this being said, what if I told you there was a strategy that required only one buy per year with minimal effort and emotions involved? Sound too good to be true? Well it’s not and let me explain to you how this strategy works.

All you need to do is setup a Roth IRA and buy an index that tracks the S&P 500 like FXAIX. On average the index sees 10% growth per year. Indexes like FXAIX have really low fees unlike an ETF. In 35 years you’ll have close to $2 MM if you max out your Roth each year.

Check it once a month and no more. At the beginning of each year max out your Roth IRA by purchasing $6k worth of an index. You don’t liquidate or sell any positions until you are 66 otherwise you pay a penalty.

It’s really this easy. No emotions, no hours spent researching stocks and watching charts. Just a simple buy and hold strategy that actually works.
