Is it correct to say that if you purchased a share of VOO in 2010 for $100, and you receive a dividend of $5.50 this year that that ROI is 5.5% on that particular share? I have some older shares and even though my total cost basis isn’t $100, I’m curious as to how this is all calculated.

As a side question, how do companies and broad etfs determine how much of a dividend to pay?
