She told me today she's tired of paycheck to paycheck, and she's tired of debt. I told her how I managed to break that cycle in my own life by starting to save 5% of every dollar I made, and gradually increased that percentage over the years.

She mentioned that for example this week, she doesn't have enough income to cover the bills, so has to float credit until next pay cycle. She said she just couldn't see how she could afford to put any money aside (I know she can though, she's a fairly unconscientious consumer). So I said, "fine, start with just 1% then. That's literally A PENNY out of each dollar. It will build the habit and show you that you CAN afford to do it."

She went door-dashing today and called me after; "I made $26, so I'm supposed to save $0.26? That's nothing though..."

I said. "EXACTLY! 1% IS NOTHING! Remember, this year isn't about building the number in the savings account, it's about building the habit of saving".

Any other ideas of how I can encourage her and help her see things in the long-term and stop the paycheck-to-paycheck lifestyle?
