My mom died yesterday. She had been having health problems for several months and her hospital social worker was supposed to apply for Medicaid. To my knowledge my mother had not heard back from Medicaid.
She owed 40k+ in medical debt before her last hospitalization (which lasted a little over 24/hrs).
She also owes $5k in back taxes.
She owns her house and car. I lived with her and paid her bills- I do not make enough to rent or buy a car. I rely on her vehicle for transportation. I am the type of neuro divergent that gets told I would never graduate highschool or hold down a job or live independently- and while I've managed the first two I won't be able to manage the second without housing. I am paycheck to paycheck.
I live in South Carolina. Is it possible that I would be able to get Medicaid to cover the medical bills?
My aunt's and uncle have scheduled a consultation with an attorney tomorrow. I will not be able to afford to see an attorney outside of this one consultation- what questions should I ask? How likely will I be able to stay in my home? She had no will, I am an only child.
I know theirs no saving the house - I can't afford taxes and I'll have to downside but I need money to do that.
