I currently drive a 2008 Nissan Versa with around 120,000 miles. The inspection was up for this month so I took it in the mechanic told me that it needs a lot of work done before it passes inspection. I need new suspension coils, control arms, struts, brake pads, and both the muffler and exhaust need work done. I'm thinking the costs of both the parts and labor are going to exceed $1k+. The car itself is worth $900 without the repairs.
I have around $4,000 in savings. I'm currently looking for a new job as I recently graduated college. The job I currently work at pays $15/hr and I work 40 hours a week. A lot of my co-workers are telling me not to do the repairs because it's not worth it. I really do not want to buy a new car as I can't afford one and do not want to do monthly payments. Should I try to find a used car for around $4,000?
