My husband has an active job and wears holes in socks like nobody's business. I can darn socks and it's basically free for me to do so - I have a huge stockpile of embroidery thread I've inherited and could darn socks for years. The darning looks nice, when I do it, and is comfortable and holds up well. (the sock around the darning wears out far before the darning does).
The trouble is, I hate it. I hate it so fucking much. I used to get a real thrill from extending the life of a sock, but over time it's become so tedious and time-consuming. If there's a hell, it will be me and a giant pile of holey socks, and that's it. Forever.
Should I just suck it up and keep darning to socks?
Should I just replace crappy wal-mart socks when they get holes and just eat the cost?
Should I invest in expensive socks that (hopefully) don't wear out so quickly?
What do frugal folk do about socks?
