I moved into my new place this week which was already a huge frugality win, since it cuts down on my rent payments by 50%. I now spend about 12% of my income on housing.

I had no furniture when I started- and here’s how it went!

Got my bed off a Buy Nothing FB group in my community. It’s a hardly used full sized mattress, box spring, and bed frame, all free. My housemate also kept 8 inch bed risers from his old dorm but didn’t need them so I secured some good under bed storage + height. Used my dad’s old bedding after a good deep clean. Instead of buying a mattress topper, I used a cushy sleeping bag I’ve already had since childhood. All free!

For the desk, I have an old throw pillow on the floor, a tablecloth someone gave me over a storage bin, a whiteboard, and my work laptop. All free again!

Another housemate’s family was getting rid of their bureau with a mirror, which I’ve turned into a dresser and storage drawers in addition to a vanity & table for my fish tank. They were looking to get rid of it so it was free!

The room doesn’t have a closet so I got creative. I found a cool curtain rod with skeletons on the ends outside the house in the trash, cleaned it good, and propped it between two windows in the corner to hang my clothes up.

All said and done, fully furnishing my room cost me $0 and took five days.

Teamwork makes the dream work
