A frugal staple of mine is Walmart Great Value (and related store brands, Ol Roy's, Hyper Tough, Clear American, etc). They used to undercut every competitor by ** a lot**. Cheese, sour cream, popcorn, frozen vegetables, canned carbonated water, chicken nuggets, everything, used to be 30-50% cheaper than the next cheapest brand name.
Inflation is hitting them hard it seems. Looking at cheese, it was only 10% cheaper today. Canned carbonated waters (clear American is the store brand name) were nearly the same price - 4.39 vs. 4.99. they were 2.99 not even three months ago. Chicken nuggets were the same price as Tyson but for a larger quantity. Still cheaper but we are talking $10.99 a bag, which was under $8 a couple months ago.
All that remains is Aldi, and mark my words -- Aldi will raise their prices sharply, and my bet is soon, as they have no real competition other than Walmart. They will always be a penny under great value for many products.
I worry for those that are going to choose between utility bills and food. This is a god damn travesty.
