Vehicle is a motorcycle that on the outside looked totally fine and supposedly was in a minor parking lot collision. Mostly just wanted to flip it.

Went to DMV with the guy before doing anything and paying any money for it. DMV attendant asked me for my name and what I was doing there, I said I was looking to put this vehicle in my name and to see what the fees are. After waiting for about an hour I was called to a counter and we start the process to find out what the fees are and we all come to find out that the bike was totaled and would need a rebuild cert and inspection of function with 1200 or so in late fees.

Obviously I declined to purchase the bike.

About 3-4 months go by and I get a letter stating a towing company is trying to get me to pay almost 4K in fees by lien sale.

The DMV letter clearly states the Registered Owner, Legal Owner (Bank), and me listed under interested parties.

I have three letters from them, and a phone call to a FAMILY MEMBER looking for me.

My questions are, is this even a legal debt to someone who doesn't own this vehicle, and two is it even legal for them to search for family members phone numbers to attempt to get ahold of me.

Thanks!
