Modern western society is built on creating artificial need for cheap material items for us to consumer and throw away. (For details on this, check out www.storyofstuff.com).
Whether you’re frugal cause you’re poor or you’re conscientious or both, one easy way to play the game: if you see an advertisement for something, don’t buy it. Ever. No matter what. Take a moral stand and stick by it, cause if the company put money into making an ad for it, that means it’s really not that good and can’t be sold on it’s own merits.
I adopted this strategy just after college in the ‘90s and it’s proven me well. I’ve become immune to these things. Never have I seen ad and thought “y’know, I think I want to buy that”.
Our consumerist culture is ruining us. You can help put an end to that.
