Now, I've been on the do your own taxes side of things for over a decade, and never had an issue. But after some major life events and tons of different tax forms I was owing the tax man several thousand dollars.
I'm all for paying my fair share in taxes, I just wanted to learn why I owe so much all of a sudden, and what I can do in the future to not get a huge bill at the end of the year. I tried my best to learn about this year's tax laws, deductions, credits, etc. But there was just too much on my plate to figure this out.
I finally caved and paid a professional. She checked my work, and for the most part it was correct, I did owe a lot of money. But she then had me sift thru all my expenses. And my tax bill went from owing several thousand to owing a couple hundred.
Yes, I know I could've done this myself with time and knowledge. But when you don't have either, and the fear of doing things wrong is greater than taking the risk, I believe I made the right choice. Now, I don't know if I'll continue using said services, as I will study the forms she's filled out and see if I can understand them better. But I have to say it was a huge sigh of relief this tax season.
