So my oldest child (NB, 21) did a stupid thing. They were moving a couch into their apartment with a friend and while carrying it between two cars they scratched one of them. Happened to be their landlord's brand new BMW. Landlord is not happy, and made it clear that they expect my oldest to pay for it. (And I agreed with that. Told my child he needs to do the right thing.) The landlord also contacted me so that I would know what was going on. (I already knew.) I told them that this issue was between the two of them, and IF I decide to help that was between family. So, I've been trying to stay out of this.

Now, we all know my child does not have the ability to pay. They're working at a grocery store and barely scraping by. I was really hoping that the landlord would submit a claim to her insurance and ask for them to cover the deductible. So, I was hoping she'd ask for $500 to $1000. That would be painful, but I think they could figure something out. Instead, she went to her auto dealer and got an estimate for $2300. (I think it was just an estimate. That's what the paperwork says, but it's possible she's already had the work done.)

So, I'm trying to think of what the options are: 1) They could work out a payment plan, but I get the impression that the landlord doesn't want that. 2) They could simply say, "I can't pay" and she could decide to take him to court. I'm not sure what would happen there. 3) I could loan/give them the money. We have some set aside to "help" them when they need it, but based on my child's response to all this I'm not sure I want to. They've been acting like their the victim in all of this. This has been typical behavior for all of their life. 4) Other suggestions?

I guess however it works out my child better start looking for a new place to live when his lease runs out.
