I was transported to the hospital via ground ambulance by a fire department in Los Angeles County in 2021 due to a medical emergency and was billed $2500 for the ambulance. My private insurance paid only $500 and said my co-pay was $150, but little did I know that ground ambulance services do not need to honor this. The fire department is now saying I am responsible for the $2000 outstanding balance. I currently have the bill on hold since I've opened an appeal for my insurance to settle this claim with an additional payment, but if my insurance refuses, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I'm currently on unemployment and barely scraping by as it is which doesn't help matters either. Any advice? Is the California Department of Managed Healthcare helpful in these scenarios?
