Hey guys, sweet greetings from France :)
To give you a little bit more context, I've decided to go visit the US in March, as it's a goal I have had for a long time now. Many people suggested I go for a road trip across the US as it's pretty big it would be a good way to see most of the US. I decided to go for 45 days. I will go from the East coast to the West coast.
So I am planning the road trip for a few weeks now: I have my itinerary, spots and people to sleep at, my flights, .. every ready but the car.
Why is it such an issue?
Well, I am 20 when I'll travel and it seems like it's a big problem in the US to rent a car, and that's why I need your help today because I'm running out of options and energy to make it happen.
Here's what I explored:
- Rent a car despite the underage fee - impossible as it would make the trip too expensive, the minimum I found is 6000$ for 45 days, which is way over my budget for the car (which would be ideally not more than 2000$, up to 3500$)
- Buy and sell a car for the trip - could be possible but it's hard because of the paperwork and the need to have a registered address. And I am afraid of the delay to have the car registered and ready to go. But could be my best option?
- Buy an old car with a lot of mileage, with the same budget as I would do for rental, and then threw it away at the end of my trip. The risk here is that the car breaks during my trip, and I'm not really good at fixing cars myself.
- Rent a car to a private. I couldn't find much information about how possible it is. But if it is then I can probably earn someone's trust and ensure the car myself. It would also mean the drop-off location has to be at my departure point... Do you have any information about it?
- Wait until I'm 25 - not an option - I'd rather explore the USA using planes.
- Travel with a friend - not an option - I wait for this trip for a long time and really want to do it alone to meet people on the way.
I would really appreciate any advice or tips here :)
Love from France!
