I have been asked to be a head-brewer for a startup brewery in our small town and I don’t know what to ask for as far as compensation. I have 20 years homebrewing experience, but I believe that is not all that I’m offering the business. I offer established connections, social value, and my wife’s talent for social media, which in itself is another issue of compensation. We all want this brewery to happen, but I want to feel compensated for the time and efforts I’m putting in beyond being the head-brewer. I have lived in this small community much longer than the folks taking on the business loan and the financial liability. Here’s the twist. We are in competition for the only state license offered to our town with another business entity. So my personal reputation helps inordinately with our push to win the support of the community at large, which the State will take into account in their decision. We still have a while before the choice will be made, but I want to ask for compensation before then, so that I don’t miss out on what I feel I’m owed. Any advice is helpful. I have very little business acumen. Throw away acct. Cheers!
