I found out several years ago when my insurance did an audit that my husband hadn’t filed our taxes in years. I went to H&R Block that day and filed “Married, Filing Separately”, for 3 years, and claimed my kids. I haven’t stopped doing that since. I was under the impression he had been paying, and making progress and found out he still hasn’t filed. It’s been at least 5 years since he filed. I have NO idea what to do. He’s self employed. I think I’m safe but what about our home and my car? What’s going to happen? Should he file now even if we can’t pay? Can he go to jail? We have 3 kids under 8. To say I’m panicking is understatement of the year.
Side note - I know I need to gain financial literacy and responsibility. It goes without saying that I’ve been too trusting and need to get involved. I went from my dad taking care of this stuff to my husband “taking care of it”, and I’m .. yeah. I’ve failed.
