I’m not really sure if this is the subreddit time ask this question, but you guys seem to know what you’re talking about financially.

I’m severely depressed and have anxiety. (I’ve dealt with a lot of death and loss recently.) It’s been recommended to me that having a dog may help with my issues. I talked to my doctor about it, and she agreed.

Unfortunately, I have government provided health insurance that would not cover something like a service dog. And I am unable to afford something like that as well. (Tens of thousands of dollars from what I’ve seen.)

I’ve been looking at adopting/buying a high energy dog, but I’m not sure if I should continue looking. I came across one recently that was readily available, but she needed a minor surgery. I called the vet, and subsequently a specialist, and found out that it would be in the $1,500 range. I could not afford this. I felt horrible, but I had to decline the offer and hope someone who could afford it will come along. So, I started thinking, “if I can’t afford this, is it irresponsible of me to continue to pursue the adoption of a dog at all?”
