We're a family of 4, soon to be a family of 5.

It's time to upsize from our mid-size SUV which we love.

Been weighing the pros and cons of minivan vs a larger SUV and my heart wants the SUV but it seems the mini van probably makes more sense all around. But I'm having a hard time buying into that I guess.

I've been looking at Toyota Sequoia's, found one for a good price with decently low miles. I test drove it today. I am a big guy and it is very spacious and comfortable. Two owners, no wrecks. I'm planning to have my mechanic check it out this weekend. I could see it lasting us a long time, hauling a camper (don't have one yet), family trips and the like.

My wife is on board with the SUV, but since she's going to be doing 75% of the driving on this new vehicle the minivan might be more comfortable for her; Navigating around parking lots and hauling the kids places. Any time we take a family trip my wife prefers that I drive, but for the most part it's her using it as her daily driver.

We always buy used vehicles straight up, we aren't into financing stuff. No debt, low rent situation. Saving for down payment on a house in the next year or so. So we've agreed to a budget for this vehicle purchase and are operating within that.

I did the math and we'd save $500-$800/yr in gas if we went with a minivan over the Sequoia. And I know we could find a minivan with even lower mileage than the Sequoia at the same price point.

So I guess I need some sense talked into me because it feels like persuing the SUV is not financially responsible. We don't NEED the 4wd or the towing capacity yet.

Is it unreasonable for me to buy what I "want" just because I want it? The van ticks the boxes for what we need now and saves us money long term, so it makes more sense but I'm not even sure why I feel so opposed to it.
