Hi there, I've been tracking my grocery bills pretty heavily over the last 90 days and I am saddened to see my "normal" grocery bills up almost 20%, I figured it'd be a good chance to share my monthly costs, a description of what type of eating I do, and ask others to share theirs.
So, previously I used to spend $150 a month in groceries for 1 person eating largely whole foods diet. I have a 1/2 cow in the freezer I raised myself (sold the other half to cover cost of raising) and I work in organic commercial poultry agriculture, so I get chicken for free. Now for my normal grocery bills, I am spending almost $200 even with forgoing things like protein powder to cut costs. I don't like how I feel eating meat protein at every meal, but at this point I feel like I have to eat chicken or beef most days to keep myself from going over $200.
I eat a lot of rice, beans, and I use frozen/canned vegetables often. I avoid most premade meals (though I can't say no to the $10 for 4 cheese pizza deal at Costco every couple months) and it still seems impossible. Lactose-free dairy is at $6 per 1/2 gallon, plant based milk alternatives are just about the same. I try to eat some fresh fruit or veg daily (mostly apples or bananas or carrots) and it feels like what used to be a $25 Aldi run is now $36+.
I found an Aldi receipt from July and compared it to what I bought yesterday and the difference is insane.
July: Bananas, Apples, Spinach, Whole Wheat bread, 2 doz eggs, shredded cheese, and watermelon was $27
Yesterday: Bananas, Grapes (on sale), Whole Wheat Bread, dozen eggs, cheese, frozen broccoli, and apple juice was $38
That's a $11 increase--40%! What are you doing to maintain your grocery budget?
