Hey everyone,
I just graduated from college this spring and recently signed an offer from a company in the Cherry Hill, NJ area. The job doesn’t start until the week after Thanksgiving, so I’ve been taking this time to look for apartments in the surrounding areas. I’ve found a place in Philadelphia that I really like; it’s in a really cool neighborhood (Fishtown), built this year, and in my price range.
However my parents, who I’m currently living with until the job starts, are insistent that I stay at an extended stay hotel in the area for two weeks when the job starts so I see how much money I “really” make and don’t jump into things. They say they want to see how much rent I can afford once I actually start working. I just feel that it’s a waste of money to stay in a hotel for two weeks when I could be moved in somewhere to a place I could afford. It would work out to be around $90 a night, which would bring the whole stay at the hotel to $1,200 for the two weeks. It just kinda feels like I’m just throwing money away at that point and almost adds up to what would be an entire month of rent at the apartment I mentioned earlier.
I’d love to hear some opinions here and help me break down what really would be the best option for me.
Some numbers:
Salary: $85,000 with $3,000 relocation assistance and $5,000 sign on. Offer letter states my weekly earnings would be $1,634 before taxes.
Apartment Rent: $1,690 / mo
Student Loan Payments: $800 / mo
Thanks everyone!
