BACKGROUND: I work for a small construction company (under 50 employees) in the industrial field. The schedule is not a regular 9-5 monday-friday. Just one of many possibilities, I may work a project for 1-4 weeks with no days off, but then have a week off; or a 3-4 day project and a week off, and so forth. The company is licensed in 10 states, so I do a lot of traveling.
I currently work with my tools in the field, but I’m in the process of moving toward a more management/supervisor role. The transition has been slowed because we cannot find any new employees for fieldwork (like every other company right now) which means I’m still needed in the field.
CURRENT PAY: is $23/hr with a tax free per diem of $1 mile drove and $100 night room and board. We get the pocket the "leftover" balance of the expenses. I now have the option to drive a company truck and use a company credit card.
Question 1: Keep driving my personal vehicle (adding wear and tear) but get the per diem; or, take the company truck, lose the per diem, as the company card will then pay for travel expenses? Pros and cons to both? My boss and I have also discussed moving myself to a salary position.
Question 2: Stay hourly or go salary? What are some pros and cons to both? I understand that salary is income guaranteed every pay period as we don’t work every week, but with hourly I can rack up a lot in a short time.
Question 3: What salary should I ask for to be compensated equally or better than my current situation? After calculating my yearly wages + per diem - expenses I pocket on average $55,000 over the last 5 years (after taxes).
Question 4: Is there anything else think about before I make a decision? Anything I missed or left out?
I am just looking for outside/other opinions on my current work situation to help myself decide. Any and all comments, follow up questions, etc. are welcomed.
