I'm a graduate student with a $30k stipend in a unique situation where I have two living options next year: an apartment 3 minutes (or 15 by bike) from my lab, living with my sister and two other undergrads for $475/month. Or in the new house my parents are building 1 hour (43 mi, nice drive) away, rent-free. Either one is cheaper than my current rent of $690 for a duplex 15 minutes from work. But considering I go into the lab 5-7 days a week (usually 6 or 7, although some days I only need to go in for a few minutes to set something up for the next day), the two hour round-trip commute seems like it may add up, even though I do like driving...
I'm trying to save up for an important but not necessarily urgent medical procedure, about $8,000 total. Right now I'm able to save about $300/month. I'm tempted to live with my parents next year to get it a few months sooner, but I'm not sure... I should be able to afford it within the next two years either way, hopefully.
Anyway I was just curious if anyone had made a similar decision/what people's recommendations would be. Any help is appreciated.
