I’m currently a full time college student and live in a small apartment in California with my mother (age 50) and grandparents (age 70, 80). Our family has grown up poor due to my mother working a dead-end job, being bad with money, and relying on welfare. In the future when I graduate college and move out, my mother and grandparents expect to live with me in order to provide them housing and other necessities. However, I am not comfortable living with my mother as she is manipulative and narcissistic. It feels unfair to work hard to get out of poverty and gain financial peace, only to fund my mother in need—the one who put us in poverty in the first place. Refusing her will likely result in a fit of psychotic rage, yet I feel the most I will be able to do is to help her with a portion of her rent and groceries. Though, doing that for 20+ years, only to fund her bad habits while I try to live my own life doesn’t seem that viable. I seek guidance to help my mother and I plan on what to do to.
