I got a voicemail that said it was Sargent so and so from the county I work in and to call back ASAP about an important matter. I usually ignore calls but this one sounded like it could be legit. I googled the name and it matched the county police. I called the county police directly and the woman told me that that Sargent’s name was correct. She could not give me his number though.
So I called back. It went to voicemail that sounded legit. I left a VM and a bit later another Sargent (another legit name) left me a VM. I called him back and ended up speaking to him for like 15 minutes. He didn’t have a foreign accent but I found it hard to understand him because he had a southern accent. He told me I missed jury duty and that I could choose the civil process or criminal process. I said I never received a summons though and he kept saying this is a courtesy call and I needed to make a decision on what process i wanted to take or I could have a bench warrant. I said i didn’t feel comfortable because I didn’t understand and it was very confusing. He read off a citation number/code and told me to write it down and repeat it back to him which I did. He said I would need it when I went to court. We got stuck on me saying whether I wanted criminal or civil whatever and I told him I wanted to verify this is legit and not a scam. He said he would put me through to someone to verify but I said no and I wanted to call on my own to verify. He said if I hung up it would be proceeding as criminal.
Eventually he told me I would be proceeding with the criminal process then and he hung up on me.
He never asked for money and only asked me to verify my address (which I live in a different county and I asked him why would i get called for jury duty in a different county? And he pronounced my common street name and city way wrong) and to repeat back the citation number/code.
So what it is? He didn’t ask for money or sensitive info. I called the county sheriffs office again afterwards and they could not confirm that this was or was not a scam. I even went there and was told it most likely was not legit. The officers who supposedly called me were unavailable. Any ideas?
