I’m 50 years old, currently not working, but have a lifetime pension of $78K/yr, with annual increases indexed to CPI and access to cheap health insurance. Spouse is employed at $140K/yr. Our combined net worth is ~$2.5M. Brand new empty nesters, youngest just joined the military. No big college or other expenses upcoming, no expensive hobbies. Still maxing both IRAs, still saving and investing without me being employed. Only debt is $140K mortgage remaining on $550K home. All cars paid off, no credit card debt, no student loans, no debt of any kind other than the mortgage.
My question is this.
I’m only 50, I can get a ~$150K/yr job in my field. Part of me feels like I “should” work. The other part of me feels like I don’t need to, and really enjoys having my time as my own. The spouse doesn’t care either way.
Currently, the “don’t need to” part is winning.
What would you do?
