I need to update my and my wife’s W4’s after a number of changes this year and I’m not sure how to factor these into the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator. Here are the changes:
-Our second daughter was born mid February. My wife’s job (teacher) doesn’t offer paid leave so from 2/22/21 until 5/9/21 she was on unpaid leave. Her pay for the month of May was prorated and all taxes withheld. But due to her leave period she was not paid for June or July. In July the school system switched pay frequency from Monthly to “school year Monthly” (10 per year rather than 12) effective her 8/31 pay check, so now her checks will be bigger. Since she paid no income taxes for ~4.5 months and her pay frequency is changing, how do I take all this, and the addition of another dependent into account?
-My work location changed states effective 8/1 I’m assuming that, and adding another dependent are simple W4 updates, but am I missing something? Thanks for the help.
