I'm currently a graduate student living on off-campus apartments with another roommate. Our rent is due September 2.

The landlord wants a single check, so our arrangement is for my roommate to Paypal (or Venmo) me her portion of the rent, and then I send in the check before the deadline.

My roommate is an international student. She wants me to send in the check for the full rent by Sept. 2, and claims she'll pay me some time later in September. She claimed it takes a while for money to transfer internationally. Furthermore, there are some fees associated with transferring money internationally, and she wants to spend some time to find the optimal way to minimize (or potentially waive) the fees.

Today is Aug. 20. I feel like it would take 2 days at most to find the optimal way to transfer money (plus, this international student has lived in off-campus apartments before). After that, it would take at most 4-6 days for the money to arrive (usually even less).

Should I just cover her rent? I'd love to empathize and help out, but I had extremely bad experiences with loaning people money before, and have eventually come to learn that money you loan should be assumed as gone. If we signed the lease, would she legally be required to pay me back for September rent (after I already paid it)?
