I’m 22, he’s 19. Basically the title, I don’t know what to do. We recently did a family real estate deal between my mom’s siblings where each one received a lot of cash, with the agreement being that it would be used for the kids’ college tuition.
Instead, my parents are using the money for themselves and then paying for my younger brother to go to a University for 4 years. They don’t want to help me at all because they don’t see me as a “good bet”. We have the same GPA’s, but he was more popular in school and was on the football team, which they really took pride in. I’m kind of the black sheep.
I tried to help them and did community college for 2 years, which I had to pay for part of. I now have to go to a University for 2 more years to finish college, and they are refusing to pay for any of it because they would rather see my brother through school. He’s not even going to a prestigious university, it’s a state college with a reputation as a party school and a huge dropout rate.
I’m pretty bummed because I’m going to have to go in for around $40,000 with living expenses now, and I didn’t plan on taking on all that debt, although it looks like I have no other choice.
Sorry if I’m venting, I know the answer is just “tough luck, start saving now and just keep your head up,” but I want to see if there’s anyone else who has been through a similar situation and has any advice.
