I’ve [19F] been on a joint account with my mom since I was 14. Recently, I decided to change my direct deposit to a separate checking account that my mom doesn’t have access to. She got super mad about it and said she would increase the rent I pay to something unrealistic and obviously I can’t afford. I make about $1,560 a month of which $900 is the rent I pay to my parents. I’ve been working all my life and my mom has been using my money for her own expenses. Once I changed my direct deposit, she realized she lost access to my money. I’m very responsible with my money and don’t splurge on unnecessary things. She claims that the only reason why I’m changing my direct deposit is to hide my expenses. So she decided that she would increase my rent to $1,200. She gave me an ultimatum and said I either change the direct deposit to my teen account that I share with her or I pay higher rent. Is it normal for a parent to have their kid on a teen account because that’s what my mom is trying to convince me with. Any advice is appreciated.
