I'm 29. I have a county level job. It's pretty easy, I like most of it. I don't have to pay into the state pension (I like that) but I get 14 holidays off a year, 3 soon to be 4 weeks of vacation, automatic 2% raises every year, super great cheap health insurance, and I only work 35 hours a week. I work 2 night shifts a week and have to work every other Saturday (were open to the public). Covid sucked for me because of the public but I remained gainfully employed the whole time, so the job security is great. Also the area where I work is kind of a rural shore town which isn't the worst place to live. I make 48k a year. I usually make another 3k a year form churning or beer money activities.
The room for advancement is low. A promotion means a ton of increased responsibility but only a 5k year raise and only 2% after that. But I'd be on call a good portion of the week when I'm not working to handle office problems, the schedule, etc. I don't think I want that. I'm now crazy about the salary I make now but I love my benefits. I don't have to worry about health issues or job security. My bf is currently waiting on his VA disability determination so it's unclear how much he will be bringing in. I already own my home. The payment is 1000 a month. We want to have kids in a few years and my bf will stay home with them if he qualifies for VA disability. I'm working on a side hustle that I hope will start being profitable over time. Many people have made a full time living off if but it takes years to build up to that level. Is it ridiculous to stay at my comfortable job even though the pay is not amazing? My only remaining debt besides my mortgage is 12k in student loans but I have 34k in a savings account and 84k in investments. My bf also has 100k in investments. Depending on his disability we want to invest in rental properties. That along with my side income and his disability, I think we should be able to FIRE from passive income in 10-15 years. We only need 3k a month for our expenses and that's on the high end.
