I see stories of this happening pop up sometimes, and it’s utterly terrifying. Are these stories usually uninsured people? If not, how does this happen to those who have insurance, which usually has an out of pocket maximum - shouldn’t the highest debt be 20-30k or whatever the maximum is? How can I protect myself from unexpected medical bills in the hundred thousands? Are there certain insurance gotchas to be aware of? Fear of something like this happening out of my control has literally been keeping me up at night.
