Hi all, I'm in the process of moving to a new place that is completely unfurnished. So, I need to get appliances. For a start – I'm thinking fridge, washer, kettle, microwave, vacuum cleaner. maybe some other small kitchen items too. I'm trying to decide between some options:

  1. Getting used ones off freecycle/online marketplaces for free – but I would have to pay a mover for fridge and washer, and it's around $100 a trip. Also, may need to get someone to help with installation for a washer (don't know how and no time to youtube it!). Also, definitely no warranties. No assurances either – if it doesn't work upon arrival, I still have to pay the mover, there's no way to prove whether it was already spoilt or if they had damaged it.
  2. Buying everything from a retailer – probably can get free delivery + installation. May also get discounts since I'm buying quite a few items. Cons – $$ of course. I've checked and the fridge + washer will set me back $1k at least.
  3. Buying big items only from retailer – fridge, washer and vacuum cleaner. Kitchen appliances I'll buy used.

I'm leaning towards #3 because it seems like the safest/smartest thing to do. For the fridge and washer, if they break down it might be quite painful – having to throw out spoiled food, or the house getting flooded etc. Or there may be problems like perhaps a used fridge might not be cold enough etc. So it seems better to get new for the peace of mind. For kitchen appliances, eh I can always drink tap water (is safe to drink in my country) or eat sandwiches or something if they break down.

But I'm also very tempted when I scroll through posts and see people give away fridges and stuff. Especially when the reason they say is "giving away because moving out". Perhaps the $100 moving charges will be worth a gamble? Or penny wise and pound foolish? If anyone has experience with that, I would love to hear your story! Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!
