On mobile… I’ve been with my company of 50,000+ employees for over 6 years now. I’ve been in three separate positions as I continue to get poached from other IT department sections. They seem to like me and respect me but we have had 4 VP of IT changes since I started. Which means org map changes, process changes, and people changes for so many years now.

It’s happening again. The director of IT called me and would like me to build and run as a level 2 supervisor for support. At first it was “manager” but then he said he’d be promoting the help desk manager to the manager of all support and I would report to him. I’m not too fond of the hd manager. He is a big complainer and I’ve never seen him actively work unless it is to suck up to the CEO’s assistant. I’ve been at the company longer than him and I know way more about all products and systems at the company. The only advantage that he has on me is he’s managed in IT. (He is older and a male. I am younger and a female.)

I’ve been supporting products for 5 years as a subject matter expert on point of sale systems and then was asked to move to our labor system (Kronos) after the Kronos expert left. I’ve been single handedly supporting a major company’s timekeeping system of 55,000 people all alone. My boss could not get a budget to hire a person under me so I bit the bullet to bide my time and do what I do best: work. Unions, state laws, federal laws, pay codes and vacation accruals - all me.

I asked the director what the salary would be but he doesn’t know but I would definitely “get a bump”. I told him I’ve heard that in the past and sometimes people forget about the hard workers because they’re just sitting there working. He said that wouldn’t happen.

I don’t know whether to accept this position or not. It seems he wants an answer by the end of day today. I just don’t know! Putting that shiny “supervisor” on my resume might be just what I need to jump ship in the next year if I absolutely hate it. However, can you work under someone you don’t respect? Can you work not knowing what that salary change is going to be?
