I have ~$450 in my FSA account. My last day of work was last week. I told HR before I left that I'd like to keep that account active as I'm going to grad school and would like to have that money if I need it for the rest of the year. They said no problem, I can extend the terms of my plan throughout the rest of the year by contributing the rest of my elected amount (which for this year was only $50) through the rest of the year. OK great.
I haven't received any info from my FSA planner and today, before the end of the month, I called to try and get more info. I was told over the phone that this is not an option and that I will have to forfeit all of my account funds.
I emailed my old HR and they said they will get me more info on Monday, but I will have to join Cobra and then rejoin the FSA plan. This was not what I previously was led to believe. Joining Cobra will cost hundreds and I do not need that as I will be picking up my school's health insurance (I told my HR this when I was leaving).
I feel like I've been scammed here out of $450. Had I known I was going to lose this money, I at a minimum would have bought a new year's worth of contacts or some prescription sunglasses.
Does anyone have any experience with this that I may be missing? Can I rejoin Cobra to get access to my FSA account plan funds without needing to pay hundreds of dollars? Can I rejoin my FSA account through my school's health insurance?
