I live on 40 acres and have been intending to order some gravely topsoil to shore up some of the grassy paths I have through my woods. Today the county is doing some roadwork adjacent to my property and I saw a loader haul a load of gravel mixed with topsoil away and disappear around the corner. I asked someone with a clipboard if that was waste and if I could have it. He said yes and yes. They were happy to have a close place to dump it and I probably got at least $500 worth of exactly what I wanted delivered for free. I understand that since it is from the old roadway, there will could be slightly more junk in it like broken glass and what not, but I poked around in it and it is no worse than average. Also, I intend to cover it with black plastic to heat it up and kill invasive species seeds.
