This is an embarrassing post. Thank god for Reddit anonymity.

I’m nearly thirty, have a ton of student debt, but a solid job which I’ve been at for a little over a year. I’m living paycheque to paycheque. I’ve got life insurance and disability insurance but no savings. After rent, student debt, utilities, insurance, gym membership, I should have about $1600.

I feel like I’ve never been able to get “on top” of my spending. Every two weeks my paycheque disappears into my credit card and the rest into rent, and then I’m either heading towards/in overdraft, or tacking onto the credit card within the next week. I’m embarrassed to admit I think I’m addicted to Amazon - those Prime nearly-instant gratification purchases.

What worked for anyone else in my situation? I feel stupid enough so I’d love to hear more than “stop spending on junk” responses. The stuff I buy I use and love so it’s not necessarily junk, but it’s frequent and clearly outside of my budget.

I’ve tried mint and similar apps. I spoke to a financial advisor and have a budget. It’s sticking to it that I need to work on. So maybe I need more cognitive behavioural tips to curb spending and just let my bank account sit in peace for a bit?
