Recently a company reached out to me and gave me a job offer, mid-level position for 48k/yr for a position I am very interested. I will be earning an extra 12k/yr. the company is small to mid size in the same field of work I am currently at but they specialize in only one area. My current job is with a very big company. I have been there for three years making 36k/yr I started in an entry level role when I was 19, I immediately loved the work and had great interest in it. I knew this field of work was for me. I spent the first two years doing my best, showed interest and took on new responsibilities willingly and I became an essential part of my dept. in order to possibly move to a new position in the company to expand my knowledge and take on new challenges. On multiple occasions when there was an opening in other departments. I would express my interest to my manager and i would get shot down every time. I would speak to the managers of other departments about my interest and they would get shot down by my manager. Finally into my third year my manager gave me a new position in an area I had no interest in to manage an account that was a complete disaster with no training and no support, just “figure it out” it was such an awful time but I knew this was my opportunity to really show what I could do and did great after just three months I cleaned up the account and reestablished a better relationship with the client and everything has been running smoothly. Two months into this new position my supervisor had told me I would not be getting the title nor a pay increase. This was upsetting on top of being left in a sh*tty situation. My manager knew I was a good employee and wanted to keep me in his dept. I was running out of things to learn in that dept. I wanted to learn different areas and I knew if I stayed he would further be stunting my growth in top of overworking me and underpaying me. I didn’t ask for a raise because he is not the type of boss to give raises. My best bet was to leave the company all together since I was being denied to move within the company.
I accepted the new job offer, submitted my two weeks to my boss and he tried to convince me to stay, I didn’t care because I had every interest in leaving, I was fed up. I later got word from a coworker stating that my manager admitted that he had f’cked up about denying me other opportunities within the company. Word got around about my resignation and a manager from a different department approached me with an offer to join his dept. I explained my reasons for leaving and he understood and agreed that if I joined his team I would be trained well in my roll and allowed to learn a variety of new thing and would be exposed to new challenges that could help build up my experience and resume and allow me to grow and would give me a 20-30% pay increase leaving me at 40k-42k which is 6-8k less than then new companies job offer but it is 4-6k more than what I currently make. I expressed my concerned and he tried to reassure me that he ran his dept differently and I would have a better experience from my previous manager. It sucks that it had to get to this point of me resigning to even be offered to move to another dept. I don’t want to accept the counter offer because I think it’s all talk and I’ll end up in the same shitty situation with this company. I plan on being in this field of work for a long time. Should I stay and learn a variety of things with this new manager with a less pay compared to what the new company is offering me or if I should leave to the new company, limit my knowledge to one specialized area and make more money considering I want to peruse a career in this field. I want to make the best choice, any advice is appreciated.
